Bernard Buffet

The Museum of Modern Art will dedicate an exhibition to Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), one of the most famous—as well as one of the most controversial—French painters of the 20th century.

Through a
selection of approximately one hundred paintings the exhibition will offer an
in-depth look at the entirety of the artist’s work from the mid-1940s up to
1999, the year of his suicide. The exhibition will put the major themes
explored by the artist into perspective: clowns, and the theme of cycles in
religion, mythology, literature and allegory. The emphasis of the exhibition
will be on his major series that are little known to the general public (Horreur de la Guerre, les oiseaux, les
etc.) and on the history of
painting (Le Sommeil d’après Courbet, La
Leçon d’atonomie d’après Rembrandt
etc.) up to the last spectacular series
which references medieval Memento mori. The exhibition will make use of a wide
range of documentation to highlight the artist’s reputation, and the reasons
for critics’ disaffection with the artist, many times just as intense as their
initial infatuation with him had been. The artist’s paintings and working
methods will also be presented, as well as his radical positions on both
artistic and personal levels. CURATORS:

À travers une sélection d’une centaine de peintures, l’exposition propose une relecture d’une œuvre qui a été en réalité très peu vue.

Plus d'informations:
