SECRETS AND TREASURES OF DIPLOMACY

THE ART OF PEACE

Présentation

The Petit Palais and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development invite visitors to walk through 1,000 years of the history of peace.

For the first time the exhibition will present to the public the most emblematic treaties, true works of art from diplomatic archives, and important witnesses of history. They will be accompanied by an exceptional selection of artwork: paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings, musical compositions and filmed archives: precious arts which were used over the centuries to prepare minds for peace and soften hostility. The art of peace is not just a matter for diplomats. Artists have illustrated, by commission, negotiations and the signatures of major figures, the arrival of ambassadors, the hope of populations through allegories. Others have drawn or engraved the peoples’ reaction, public opinion, often their sense of relief, and at times their criticism through caricatures that can be both fierce and delightful. It is to this art of negotiation that the Petit Palais wishes to pay tribute.
