The Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris presents an original exhibition exploring the relationship between three major 20th century artists: Derain, Balthus, and Giacometti.

Featuring close to 200 works, it retraces the important moments in this artistic friendship. Their meeting in 1933, and their deepening friendship starting in 1935, intensified the crossover between their lives and their art. Far beyond mutual admiration and the real affection for each other they expressed throughout their lives, they were bound by a profound aesthetic commonality. A number of common threads run throughout the exhibition: the journey to Italy, a fascination for the “metier”, the cultural gaze, and the “return to the Museum”, through which the three artists experimented with codes of representation, styles, and techniques: formal clarity, chiaroscuro, as well as dramatisation and the “invention of a pathos”. A chronological and thematic display shows their big landscapes and still lifes, as well as points in common: actors, collectors, friends, gallery owners, and models. Lastly, a large sequence focuses on their post-war works which reveal the doubts and obsessions of a faltering world. CURATOR : Jacqueline Munck#expoDBG
